Leap Day

Sixteen-year-old Josie Taylor was born on Leap Day, February 29, and today is her fourth real birthday, full of birthday surprises, a school play audition, her driver's test, a scavenger hunt, and the secret sweet-sixteen initiation at the lake. Like any average teenager, sometimes she wonders what other people are thinking. Leap Year is announced by that last day of February that only appears every four years. It also is the same year of the Summer Olympics and the Presidential Election. Leap Year has been around for thousands of years. February usually has 28 days, but during Leap Year--which is coming up in 2008 and every four years--it has 29. Why is there a February 29th?

Julius Caesar first created Leap Year in 46 B.C. so that the calendar year would match the solar year. The solar year, or the amount of time it takes the Earth to travel around the Sun, is about 365.2422 days. The extra .2422 creates an entire extra day every four years.

We now follow the Gregorian calendar which is slightly more exact. What about people who are born on February 29th? Their birthdays only happen every four years! February 29th is the Leap Day of the Leap Year.
